REICHIAN CHARACTER TYPES One of Wilhelm Reich's core concepts was that repressed emotions and memories are held in the body in the form of muscular tension. He refined this idea through observing that his clients tended towards specific patterns of tension that gave rise to specific character and personality traits. He categorised these patterns of tension into 5 basic types which he referred to as " character types" The Schizoid ( the unwanted child) The Oral ( the needy child) The Masochist ( the endurer) The Rigid ( the perfectionist) The Psychopath ( the inspirer) He observed that each type tended to experience a core trauma at a specific developmental stage ( from 0 to 5 yrs old) , which laid down a pattern of muscular tension and ego defenses which were then carried into adulthood. As part of our 7 week " Restoring Balance" course we explore each character type in depth, and look at the healing and transformative potential that resides within each type. In this video Kay talks about the Psychopathic Character structure both in its pathological and transformed state
