REPORT ON GANZI MINISTRY OF MINING

On Wednesday, September 23, 2025, the Ministry of Mining (MOM), led by Hon. Matiok Santino Akuei, PhD, conducted an official inspection of mining activities in Lainya County, Central Equatoria. Joined by senior MOM officials, including Director Generals and law enforcement agencies, to verify reports of illegal mining and ensure regulatory compliance. The Ministry confirmed the presence of widespread artisanal and large-scale illegal mining operations in the area. An investigation has been launched, and immediate actions are being implemented to curb these illegal activities, which pose a significant threat to government revenue and regional stability. The MOM calls on authorities, particularly law enforcement agencies, including National Security, Mining Police, and the SSPDF, to collaborate and coordinate efforts to combat illegal mining in the country. These illegal practices must be addressed in accordance with Section 20, subsections 1 and 2 of the Mining Act (2012), which gives police the power to make arrests without warrants, and in line with the Mineral Regulation 2015.
