The 2017 Farrail tour to Zimbabwe was primarily a photographic tour, featuring three Garratt locomotives. 14A class 2-6-2+2-6-2 No. 519 (carrying the number plates of No. 525), 15A class 4-6-4+.4-6-4 No. 414 and 16A 2-8-2+2-8-2 No. 611. The tour began in Bulawayo where we rode behind the 14A to Cement. We then travelled by road to Thomson Junction where we travelled behind the 15A and 16A eventually spending two days at Victoria Falls. Finally we photographed and filmed No. 611 at work hauling coal trains between Thomson Junction and the Hwange Colliery. Steam in Zimbabwe is well beyond it's glory days, however, for seven days we managed to turn the clock back and had a fabulous time! For much of the time a diesel hauled our train with our passenger carriage and the crew cars leading followed by our steam locomotive and a rake of goods wagons. When stopping for photos the diesel and passenger vehicles were uncoupled and pulled forward while the locomotive set back with the wagons and steamed forward. The whole process worked well and resulted in us taking many lovely photographs. Juggling photography with videography is always a bit of a compromise, however, I managed to take enough footage to put this video together. The scenes haven't been heavily edited and, as a result, this is a relaxed and pretty chilled video, a bit like our travels through Zim! You can always fast forward the slower sequences!
