Using the Weapons of the Satan Against Him: Introduction to Paracelsus pt III

Paracelsus radically transformed the theory and practice of Alchemy. The final book of his Paramirum (lit. "Beyond Miracles") discusses the topic of Invisible and Supernatural Diseases and their treatments. These sections are fascinating for their discussions of the role of Faith, Imagination, the power of Mummia - metaphysical power in corpses - and, of course, his radical discussion of Sorcery as "using the tools of the devil against him." Here we find Paracelsus at his most speculative and shocking, suggesting that doctors should transgress the Old Testament Laws against Sorcery, making use of magic to combat Satan and Sickness together.
