#brazil vs #france #worldcup #football #2006fifaworldcup #zidane #ronaldinho #ronaldo #henry Thierry Henry's superb volley knocked reigning champions Brazil out of the World Cup as France progressed to the semi-finals. Inspired by man-of-the-match Zinedine Zidane, France performed better in the first half, but failed to create clear chances to trouble Dida. Things changed just before the hour mark when Zidane curled a free-kick at the far post and volleyed past the Brazilian goalkeeper by Henry. Fabien Barthez thwarted Ronaldo's late attempt to progress to the semi-finals with Portugal. Before this save, Barthez had missed on several occasions, but a sign of Brazil's poor play was Ronaldo's shot in the final minutes. Brazil had progressed to the quarter-finals, but Carlos Alberto Parriera's side had no answer against a French team that combined defensive discipline with superb attacking play. France's journey to the last eight was full of suspense, but the knockout stage has brought out the best in Raymond Domenech's side. Zidane was outstanding throughout the match, and after the break, Henry and Franck Ribery's pace disrupted the Brazilian defence. From the first minute, Brazil had a glimpse of what was to come in the remaining 89 minutes as Zidane dodged a series of Brazilian tackles as he executed his trademark quick turns and stepovers. Zidane's kick that deceived Cafu was no less touching, while holding and teasing Kaka by juggling the ball. Not wanting to be outdone, Brazilian number 10 Ronaldinho swiftly touched the ball into Ronaldo's path before the Brazilian striker could be closed down by the French defense. Zidane's free kick provided France's best chance of the first half but Florent Malouda's header went over. A minute before the break, another Zidane miracle was unleashed by Patrick Vieira, who was brought down by Juan, who was booked. A minute after the start of the second half, Vieira almost scored with a header from Zidane's free kick. As the second half progressed, Henry began to come forward, first running past Cafu, then harrying Lucio, before the Frenchman's backheel almost knocked Vieira's shot away. Often in their career with France, Henry and Zidane failed to produce results, but in the 57th minute the combination of the two had a devastating impact. Zidane fired a free kick far forward and Henry spectacularly volleyed past Dida and into the roof of the net. Soon afterwards Ribery almost created a second goal for France when his cross was almost accidentally turned into the Brazilian goal by defender Juan. Ribery then failed to meet Henry's pass, but Dida managed to grab the ball before the Marseille winger. This win means France have beaten Brazil in three of their four meetings at the World Cup.
