Panasonic S5 5.9K 12 Bit ProRes RAW Video Test Part 2 So Panasonic just released the firmware update for the Lumix S5. And I did the firmware update straight away. That 5.9K video just turn the S5 to a baby S1H. And it is not just about the 6K video. It is the 12Bit ProRes RAW. Plus the full pixel read out. The S5 is actually pushing its limits. You wouldn’t believe that camera is only costing US$2K. The image coming out from camera is so good. Although I much I love shooting everything internally. But when the camera is less than $2K. I wouldn’t complain it too much. The only thing I will complain is the tiny little HDMI. As soon as I move the Ninja V a little bit, I lose connection. I know Panasonic some how have to project the S1H a little bit. But if they have decided to give the S5 5.9K video. They should have given you at least mini HDMI. Not micro HDMI port. During the test, some of you might be wondering why I used Canon lenses only. The reason is, Panasonic is not my main kit. I use Sony and Canon the most. I know using native lens would be better. Such as the auto correct the vignetting issue. Also video auto focus would be better. But I found Panasonic video AF never works well anyway. So I rather just stick with Canon lens and do the manual focus. Note: I haven’t shot with ProRes RAW video before. So I have found something very interesting. First, When you switch on the 5.9K ProRes RAW mode. The camera will automatically switch on the V-Log Picture Profile. But when you bring the footage to Premiere Pro. The V-Log picture will no longer there. Unlike CanonRAW, you cannot change the picture picture in post. So I’m not sure why it wasn’t there anymore. Second, when you load up the ProRes RAW footage. All the exposures were all. Its completely off for 3 stops. Ofcoz you can bring the exposure back. But it reminds me when I used to work with “Magic Lantern”, I sort of understand Magic Lantern hack because it wasn’t a Canon thing. But now we are working on the Panasonic footage with Panasonic software. No idea why it was like that. Third, there is one little thing I didn’t understand, once you are in 5.9K mode. There is no way you can zoom in and check your focus. I had to do the zoom in on my Ninja V. I mean it’s not the end of the world. And I’m sure it’s an easy fix by another firmware. Fourth, the S5 has the sensors lack anti-alias (Low-Pass) filters. Removing anti-alias filter increases the sharpness and level of detail but at the same time, it increases the chance of moire occurring in certain scenes. So some of the roof shots and building shots were very noticeable. Over all, the Panasonic S5 was already a very nice camera. With the new 2.0 firmware. It just makes it even better.
