[Anchor Lead] The naval power gap between South Korea and Japan has widened as the Japanese Navy has acquired an aircraft carrier with stealth fighter jets. The Korean Navy is working hard toward setting up counter-strategies with China and Japan beefing up their naval capacities to change the security environment around the Korean Peninsula. [Pkg] The largest vessel belonging to the Korean Navy is the 15,000-ton grade amphibious assault ship Dokdo. It can transport tanks and helicopters as well as troops. But even if its deck is modified to lengthen the runway, it is still incapable of accommodating even the F-35B capable of short landing and takeoff. [Soundbite] Moon Geun-sik(Korea Defense Forum) : "The vessel should be between 30 to 40,000 tons to enable safe takeoff and landing of the F-35B." It takes between one to two trillion won to acquire such a small aircraft carrier. This is why some military experts argue that the Korean Navy should turn the 3,000-ton submarine presently under development into a nuclear-powered one to boost operation duration and range. But even this option is not easy as a nuclear submarine may collide with a Korea-U.S. agreement on the civil use of atomic energy. As Japan has acquired an aircraft carrier, following China, the Korean government has a lot to think about concerning the oversight of maritime disputes and other potential conflicts. [Soundbite] Noh Kyu-duk(Ministry of Foreign Affairs Spokesman) : "Our position is that Japan's defense and security policies should be carried out transparently to contribute toward regional peace and stability under the basic idea of its Peace Constitution." There is discussion that Korea should consider various factors and risks in the surrounding environment before setting up its security strategies. And that the country also needs to think out of the box to keep pace with the changing conditions of war.
