The trial against the former Yugoslav president for alleged atrocities during the breakup of Yugoslavia is Europe's most important war crimes case since the Nuremberg proceedings against Nazi Germany's leaders after World War II. As he left, the debate around the tribunal was raging over whether his trial was going to be fair. Tribunal spokesman Jim Landale said the onus was on the prosecution to prove Milosevic's guilt. But Milosevic's supporters were critical after the opening remarks from Chief UN prosecutor Carla Del Ponte. Some said the remarks had been too political, rather than concentrating on the facts. And others complained about the fact Milosevic would unlikely be able to call witnesses in his defence.
