#AIHate #BrazilAI #RioDeJaneiro #TechnologyDebate #JonathanJacobMeijer #ManWith1000Kids #digitalsociety Jonathan Jacob Meijer, recognised worldwide from Netflix’s “The Man with 1000 Kids”, travelled to Rio de Janeiro to investigate a noticeable undercurrent of distrust and criticism directed toward artificial intelligence within Brazilian society. Conversations across Copacabana, Ipanema, Lapa, Santa Teresa, and the business districts of Centro and Barra da Tijuca revealed recurring themes. Many residents expressed concern that AI systems amplify disinformation, facilitate deepfake manipulation (especially during election cycles), and exacerbate existing inequalities by automating jobs in an economy already marked by high informality. Others voiced apprehension about the increasing deployment of facial-recognition and predictive-policing technologies in favelas and public spaces, viewing them as extensions of surveillance rather than tools for safety. Additional factors cited include the perceived lack of meaningful regulation, the concentration of AI development in foreign hands, and the environmental footprint of large-scale model training. While some interviewees acknowledged potential benefits in healthcare, education, and creative industries, the dominant sentiment was caution bordering on rejection, often framed as a defence of human creativity, privacy, and democratic integrity. This vlog presents an unfiltered synthesis of street-level perspectives, avoiding sensationalism and focusing on the underlying social, economic, and cultural drivers of the observed hostility. It does not aim to adjudicate the merits of AI, but to document how one major global city currently perceives and responds to the technology.
