By converting some of our silver refining waste into sodium nitrate, we can then add sodium bisulfate monohydrate to create fuming nitric acid. The reason for doing this experiment was, although I regularly use sulfuric acid to do bulk repurifications of nitric acid. I run into small amounts of sulfuric in my nitric acid. All of these compounds and more are collected and retrieved in the process of refining all silver including 925, silverplate, silver contacts, and alloyed metals. The process involves electrolysis using an aspirator anode bottle inside the copper and silver cells. All byproducts from the cells are collected and treated through a distillation process that captures azeotropic nitric acid and separates pure copper sulfate from unwanted base metals for reuse.
