The Conduits (Short Story)

An experimental piece about a dream I had about the forces behind human will. I tried to write it in exactly the way I had dreamt it. So hopefully It will translate into something readable 😂 ~ The Conduits ~ There are many goods in this world, as well as many evils – all of which are born from the will of man. But what are the forces behind this will? What drives the inherently good and evil to perform their respective deeds? Is the answer found in nature or nurture? Or in something far more complexed and intricate? Of course, I am playing Devil's advocate, as I have gained, by peculiar chance, intimate knowledge of these forces... I'd been stood on the higher runs of a ladder, repairing the guttering on my house, when I lost, both, my footing and my balance... The expected pain, when my head hit the driveway didn't come. All I can say is that I felt a warmth cradle me, as though I was bathing in a pool of my own blood. But when I averted my eyes, I saw nothing - no blood. A strange sense of liberation swept over me. I felt light and flighty, as though the air and I were one of the same thing. I had entered a different phase of existence, I could feel it. Whereas before I had been a caterpillar, I was now a butterfly, rebirthed from the chrysalis of my former self. That wasn't the only peculiarity afoot. Time had ceased, stilling all life around me, as though frozen within the lens of a 3-D camera. And without time driving everything forward, all sound, which is the by-product of motion, ceased too, giving birth to a spectral silence. It was all very strange to see the trees bent to the persistence of a non-existent breeze, and the cars upon the road, motionless, and the birds of the sky, mere details of a vivid fresco; and around them the clouds that no longer formed and morphed into their abstract shapes, no longer deformed and bent their abstractions, no longer wisped themselves into nothingness. They remained as they were, their capricious mischief given time-out. In that moment I saw a bee too, as I had never seen a bee before - quiet, crystallised in flight, its industry now confined to memory. I saw my father, on his way, frantic, yet frozen, his neck veined, and his mouth wide – his face scarlet, and entrenched with horrific lines, but his anguished cries silenced. I rose from the ground, from my prostrate body, as though gravity had lost its grip of me. I saw my body lay on the concrete, so lonely in its stillness - a twin born from my death, fully formed, fully grown, seeing myself, not through the soft, dreamlike warmth of a camera filter, but as others did, in the harsh, cold light of reality. Close to my felled body a stream of light appeared, stretching from ground to sky, semi-transparent but with ruffles that made distortions of the surrounding landscape The stream of light that had been three feet wide at first had grown, a growth that tore the air as though a piece of canvass on which life had been painted. I moved forward, towards the tear, not propelled by my own will, but by a mysterious force. I found myself in a realm of no earthly equivalent. And there I was dwarfed by a magnificent wall of watery spheres, tightly and intimately packed, stretching high and wide - beyond eyesight. As I stared, I began to buzz and vibrate, and that's when I noticed the strange creatures suspended in the watery spheres, octopi in essence, near -transparent, almost invisible to the naked eye. It was they who were responsible for my reverberating. Knowing this, somehow unlocked the door to an even greater depth of personal knowledge and understanding. These creatures were communicating with me, and not just me, with each other too – billions of organisms, separate, yet conversely operating as one. I became part of their community, and thus was able to decode the enigma of their alien language. I learnt of their supreme standing within the hierarchy of existence. I learnt that when divine providence constructs human minds, it creates a duplication of that mind, embedding one copy in the grey matter of the human brain and the other within the creatures of the watery spheres; doing so to create a vibrational channel, spanning the mortal and divine realms. The creatures, collectively known as the Conduits, were vibrating as a means of communication, speaking directly to the subconscious segment of their human counterpart. What became clear is that human desire is pre-written, in advance of our physical births - pre-written by beings far too complexed for my inferior human mind to comprehend. Desires that are scribed to aid our spiritual growth, desires that the Conduits communicate, by way of delicate vibrations to the subconscious section of the human mind. And it's there where those desires implant, and where they creep into the consciousness, and there where we, as humans, choose to act upon or repel them; and so it is there where the good and evils of this world are born.
