Objective : to create a Lawn with nice straight, level, non-receding edges, which are easy to maintain with Edging Shears per my video No.031. My back garden Lawn especially, never gets full sun, with the left hand SW edge nearly always in shade due to the close proximity of the tall party fence with my neighbour. As such, the grass there is not vigorous and the ground damp & soft, lacking edge strength. It therefore is prone to being compressed down towards the flower bed & the weak edge disintegrates & recedes. I was getting fed up with the untidy edges & had for many years been thinking of supporting the Lawn edges with a strong steel edging product similar to what you see used at Stately Home gardens e.g. National Trust properties. My Mum employing a willing new Gardener, encouraged me to investigate products available. I found the company EverEdge had many types for both domestic up through professional & in various finishes. I chose the upper domestic product called The Classic but with the strength increasing rolled over top edge called Rolltop, in a zinc galvanised & brown powder coated finish. The product is 100mm tall plus the securing Spikes. I also purchased their ground anchor stakes called Pin & Sleeves, to attach to the Edging Spikes every metre or so, because most of my application had one unsupported side. The standard Classic has an overlapping interlocking length-to-length joining together mechanism. The Rolltop Classic version cannot overlap, so each 1m length butts up to the next and are joined together by Joining Plates & small Coach Screws/Bolts. This gives a full 1m usable length which the standard Classic does not have. So full 5m length per pack for the Rolltop vs 4.75m usable length per pack for the standard Classic, for calculating how many 5m packs you require. I ordered one extra pack for screw-up error contingency. I also procured some better rust-proof stainless steel Nuts & Washers. Starring : • Installer - Gardener - Steve Spall. • The product - EverEdge brand - Rolltop Classic - Steel Garden Edging – 5 off x 1m lengths & Joining hardware / pack https://www.everedge.co.uk/product/ro... • The Lawns - my Front & Back Garden. Also Featuring Products (Part 1) : • Ground Anchors - EverEdge brand - Pin & Sleeves - 10 each / pack. • Hexagonal Nuts - Screwfix EasyFix brand - M6 – A2 stainless steel – 100 / bag. • Plain Washers - Screwfix EasyFix brand – M6 – A2 stainless steel – 100 / bag. Tools & Equipment Required (Part 1) : • Hose – to pre-water & soften the existing ground, the night before installation. • Work Table – preferably a Black & Decker Workmate - these would also make the bending of the Edging very easy – I’m not recommending the bending method shown in the video. • Builders Line & Pins – to mark out the straight edges on the lawn for truing-up. • Large Square – Framing or Folding – for squaring-up the marking out straight edges above. • Tape Measure – 16+ ft long – for checking parallel edges are parallel prior to cutting. • Half Moon Lawn Edge Trimmer – for cutting & truing up the Lawn edge profile. • Small Border Spade (Ladies) – recommended for lifting unwanted Turf. • Knife – for trimming pieces of Turf for reuse. • Spirit Level – 2+ ft long – checking levels as needed. • Speed Square – marking the corner folding positions on the Edging lengths. • Straight Edge – something long straight & rigid – to show the Lawn level profile. • Hacksaws – Junior & standard – my standard was a vintage Eclipse No.55 for sheet metal. • Angle Grinder – small – as an option to or to compliment the Hacksaws. • Pry Bar – small – for easing the gap in the Edging rollover when fitting the supplied Joining Plates. • Ratchet Socket Wrench – ¼” sq drive – with 10mm AF Socket – for tightening the Joining Plate Fasteners. • Hammer – any type – for driving in the Ground Anchor Pins (Rebar stakes) & other various uses. • Dead-blow Hammer – Draper Expert brand – Code DRA37324 - 1kg plastic/rubber model – an essential tool for the job. • Demolition Hammer Drill – with Breaker Bar Bit – only needed if hard rocky ground is present – maybe hire one for this one off use. • Mini Mattock Pick – useful tool to help remove the loosened rocky ground rubble. Dates filmed (Part 1) : • 2025-05-07 & 2025-06-04. Venue (Part 1) : • My back & front garden, Hertfordshire, England. Filming (Part 1) : • Camera – Sony Xperia 1 II (Mk2) smartphone. Video creation : • Software – Microsoft HD Movie Maker PRO. • Background sound – my own recording of songbirds at Hazeldene Farm, Asheridge, Chesham, Buckinghamshire, England.
