At 12,649 ft, Mt. Wood stands as the 3rd tallest peak in Montana - just 150ft shy of Granite Peak. This peak is rarely submitted due to it’s inaccessibility. The trial is unestablished and requires a lot of bushwhacking and route finding. While it can be done in a day, we decided to opt for a two day climb. On day one we backpacked into the Beartooth Wilderness and camped at Mystic Lake. On day two we climbed/scrambled the remaining 3500ft to the summit over loose, steep rock. We stopped about 300 vertical ft short of the summit, partly because we were exhausted, and partly because afternoon thunderstorms were quickly approaching. Mt. Wood was the only peak this summer that we did not successfully summit. However, during the 20 miles and 6300ft of elevation change we learned a lot of valuable lessons journeying deep into the Beartooth Wilderness. Mt.
