Empty Walls is a song by American musician and songwriter Serj Tankian, who is best known as the founder, lead vocalist and primary lyricist of the metal band System of a Down. The song was released as the lead single from Tankian's debut solo album, Elect the Dead, in 2007. It’s been described as a "traditionally pummeling rocker" that speaks mainly about the war against terrorism and the consequences of violence and hatred. In this one, you’ll have to mimic Tankian's distinctive vocals, which range from melodic singing to aggressive screaming. The lyrics are political and poetic and criticizes the hypocrisy and corruption of the system and urges people to break free from the confines of their mind. The song also showcases Tankian's musical versatility, as he plays keyboards, guitar and bass on the track, as well as producing and arranging it. The music video for Empty Walls, directed by Tony Petrossian, depicts a group of children reenacting scenes of war and conflict in a kindergarten, using toys and props as weapons and symbols. The video intends to show how childish and senseless the situation is, and how we are conditioned to war and violence at a young age. It also features Tankian singing in front of a wall covered with pictures of victims of war and genocide, including the Armenian genocide, which Tankian has been actively campaigning for its recognition. Empty Walls was well received by critics and fans alike, and became a hit on various rock charts, reaching number one on the Billboard Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks and Hot Modern Rock Tracks charts. The song also earned Tankian a Grammy nomination for Best Hard Rock Performance in 2008, but lost to Foo Fighters' The Pretender. Empty Walls remains one of Tankian's most popular and influential songs, and a staple of his live performances.Let me know below what are your thoughts on Tankian’s vocals.
