What is Black Fungus (Mucormycosis)? COVID-19 patients are now faced with a new infection, black fungus (Mucormycosis). Mucormycosis is a fungal infection, a black fungal disease, now seen in COVID-19 patients specifically those who are diabetic, those who were on systemic steroids as part of treatment, or were on immune modulator drugs, or were on long term mechanical ventilator or oxygen support. Mucormycosis fungal infection is mostly seen in COVID recovered patients. -- What are the Symptoms of Mucormycosis? #1 Facial pain and numbness #2 Fever and lethargy #3 Palatal ulcers #4 Visual loss and eye protrusion As soon as you notice any of these symptoms of mucormycosis, reach out for medical help immediately. Mucormycosis fungal infection may affect your vision, and quickly reach your brain. Even in the first wave of the pandemic, Mucormycosis fungal infection cases were noticed, but their volumes now are significantly higher in the second wave. -- Diagnosis of Mucormycosis: For signs of Black fungus, doctors check if there is any sort of black discharge from the nose, swelling around the eyes, protrusion of the eyes, swelling on the face, ulcers in the mouth, etc. Some patients may show discoloration of the skin. To diagnose Mucormycosis, some tests may be done - such as CBC test, kidney test, swab test, CT scan and contrast enhanced MR. These tests give an indication of the extent of spread of the fungus to the eyes and/or the brain. Along with these tests, blood sugar is also checked and most doctors also do nasal endoscopy to check if the fungus, black material is seen or not - which is a sign of the fungal infection. -- Treatment for Mucormycosis: Once identified, the fungal infection needs to be controlled right from the start. As part of the medical treatment, doctors may use antifungal injections to inject into the nasal cavity. There could also be surgical treatment wherein dead necrotic tissue and fungus is removed surgically. -- GOT QUESTIONS?
