Castles can be found all around the world, and their main purpose was for protection or defence. During the Medieval period the King or the local Earl would be based in castles to oversee the local town and area, and it was important that if the castle was attacked, it could protect those inside the castle well. Because of this, a number of different defensive elements were made including the brutal murder holes, which were found inside the gatehouse of castles. These were holes in the roof, in which guards would stand above and trap an enemy between two gates of portcullis'. After the enemy was trapped, they would rain down hell from above, pouring boiling water and oil onto them as well as throwing hot sand onto the soldiers. Also they would throw stones and more horrific things onto the enemy who were basically just sitting ducks. At the side of the gatehouses were also holes in the walls, in which guards would stab the enemy with swords and spears. Murder holes were very effective ways of defending a castle, but were incredibly brutal! So join us today as we look at, 'MURDER HOLES! THE BRUTAL WAY OF DEFENDING A CASTLE!'
