This video is the first in a series of "Scale Concepts" by Jorge Strunz played by Sergio Lara. Jorge Strunz notes: "Through my experimentation with playing high-speed scales on the guitar: sixteenth notes at 184 or more beats per minute, for example; I have found that not all scale patterns are workable. In other words, the basic scale "potential" of the guitar offers fewer possibilities than for the violin or for the flute. So, if you want to master high velocity scale playing on the guitar, you need to know which scale patterns fall "organically" on the fretboard. Yes, there are inherent limitations; but there are still a surprising number of possibilities. In considering these "organic" patterns, we should establish two separate "tempo families": six-note-per-beat patterns and four-note-per-beat patterns. In general, six-note-per-beat patterns lie approximately between 112 and 150 beats per minute on the metronome. Four-note-per-beat-patterns can have a faster tempo setting, generally falling somewhere between 150 and 224 beats per minute. The examples showing here are sixteenth-note scale patterns (four notes per beat). They are written in the key of "G", with an occasional passing note. They may be played over various chords of that key, such as "Am7", "Bm7", and "D7" and they also may be played over chords extensions of the key , "Am9", "Cmaj9", "D13", and so on. A good beginning tempo would be the fastest metronome setting at which you can comfortably handle sixteenth notes. Start by practicing the basic pattern, repeating it until it is smooth. Practice the patterns in a variety of keys. You'll also find that the same ideas can be worked out in different positions. The examples can be given a different rhythmic "feel" by making the first two notes of each example sixteenth-note pickups, making the third note of each pattern the downbeat. As you get better at playing these patterns, move the metronome gradually up to the higher speeds, with 200 beats per minute as an objective. Right hand alternate picking should be used throughout, whether it be the standard classical-style finger alternation, or the down-up strokes of flatpicking."
