In 1854, the London Necropolis Railway began transporting coffins and mourners between Waterloo Station and Brookwood Cemetery in Surrey. This unusual funeral service was joined a few years later by the far lesser known Great Northern London Cemetery Company, which ran a similar operation between King's Cross and Colney Hatch, Barnet.
