Lee Alston, newly-appointed director of the Ostrom Workshop, is taking the helm during an exciting time in the workshop’s history. The Ostrom Workshop, founded in 1973 by Vincent Ostrom and Elinor Ostrom, has built an international reputation for research and scholarship on issues related to self-governance, democratic reform and collective action. Now, four decades later, the campus seeks to build upon the intellectual legacy of the Ostrom Workshop to develop new areas of study that preserve and enhance IU’s reputation for research excellence. The workshop has undergone a strategic planning process to develop priorities aligned with IUB’s Bicentennial Strategic Plan, including active participation in Grand Challenges Initiatives and the establishment of the Ostrom Workshop as the focal point for research that benefits all social sciences on campus.
