I apologize in advance for the disheveled video, I have not made a video like this before. Above is my account of a herniated s1 l5 disc that resulted in severe radiculopathy/sciatic nerve pain. In October 2015 I sustained injury weight training for ski season. At 32 years old, and extremely active in outdoor sports, I did not identify my leg pain with a back injury. From October 2015 through New Years 2016 my pain did not abate. I continued my fitness routines and skied about 20 days. On New Year's day 2016, I woke up with severe pain and numbness in my left leg. The pain radiated all the way from my left buttock to my left foot. An MRI confirmed a herniation of the s1 l5 disc. After meeting with a brain and spine surgeon I began conservative measures for rehabilitating this injury. I attended physical therapy for four months, 3 times a week. This therapy was largely based on the McKenzie method. After four months I had seen very little, if any, improvement. My drop foot/limping had not improved and I could barely stand to fuel my vehicle or grocery shop without being in severe pain. I had a second MRI in May 2016 that confirmed my herniation had not improved and had increased in size. June 2016 I received an epidural steroid injection. Over the next weeks after this injection, my pain increased and my drop foot became more debilitating. July 7th, 2016 I met with my brain/spine specialist who immediately scheduled a microdiscectomy for July 13th, 2016. Needless to say, I was terrified at the thought of back surgery. I went into surgery at 6am that day and was home by 2pm. Upon waking up from anesthesia my leg pain was gone. I had some slight surgical site soreness for three days post-op. I have not had any returning pain since the operation, one week later. I have been walking between 3-4 miles a day with no pain. My left leg is a bit tired from regaining strength after months of limping but it feels amazing to move around pain-free. This is only my account of this injury. Please seek an experienced spine surgeon and gain a second opinion before deciding on surgery. My microdiscectomy has sincerely changed my life. Please post a comment or question below. I will be happy to respond. I know it is scary, lonely and depressing to have this injury. You can recover so have hope, have faith and be honest with yourself when you need help. All the best, I hope you feel better soon. 9 month follow-up: Β Β Β β’Β microdiscectomyΒ s1Β l5,Β 9Β month(ish)Β follow-upΒ Β
