Take A Minute …and transport yourself to another time & place. Donaghadee sits on the Irish Sea coast side of the Ards Peninsula, eight miles northeast of Newtownards. The town boasts a long seagoing history, so it’s not surprising that it still maintains a special relationship with the sea, proving very popular with water enthusiasts (look out for the sea swimmers below) and those who simply like to be beside the seaside. Spectacular views can be enjoyed across the Irish Sea, where on a clear day you can see all the way across to Scotland - only 20 miles away. Donaghadee was the province’s principal port before Belfast developed. The Harbour was built in 1820's to the design of John Rennie and is constructed in part with limestone from Wales known as "Anglesey marble". At the end of the harbour breakwater is Donaghadee's impressive lighthouse, which was built in 1836 and was the first lighthouse in Ireland to be lit by electricity. Did you know? 🤔 Donaghadee is the home of the famous lifeboat station which played such an important role in rescuing survivors of the MV Princess Victoria in 1953 Did you know? 🤔 Donaghadee features as the fictional town of Port Devine in the BBC drama Hope Street which first aired in 2021. Filming is officially underway on series five!
