In this video, Cecil Young and I uncover a hidden African American burial ground in Marion County, Georgia, concealed in the woods beside a well-maintained church cemetery. The stark contrast between the two sites is striking, and this forgotten cemetery, undocumented to our knowledge, holds incredible historical significance. We explore the area, locating numerous graves with unique markers and an array of artifacts such as glass bottles, broken pottery, and other items steeped in African American burial traditions. These artifacts provide a glimpse into the spiritual and cultural practices of those laid to rest here, possibly dating back to the era of enslavement. It’s possible this burial ground began as a resting place for enslaved members of the church congregation, a common yet often overlooked historical context in the region. Names in this cemetery include Millner (Milner), King, Overstreet, and People. African American cemeteries are rich with cultural symbolism, blending Christian beliefs with traditions brought from Africa. The items found reflect a deep connection to heritage, faith, and freedom in death. This site is a poignant reminder of a history that deserves recognition and preservation.
