This performance by Melissa Manchester of 'Skylark' from a Johnny Mercer Special, was a special request. While this channel focuses soley on Johnny Mathis' work - as there really is no match anywhere for his incredible gifts - ala instrument--, I also appreciate what I experience as beautiful music, particularly from the "American Songbook". There are so many wonderful composers and lyricists and Johnny always seems to choose them - from all genres and periods. They are the 'canvas' on which Johnny (and in this case, Melissa) 'paint'. What an incredible combination - the marriage of Johnny Mercer's lyrics with Hoagy Carmichael's gorgeous composition and melody. According to Wikipedia, Johnny Mercer was challenged for one year to find the right lyrics after receiving the music from Carmichael. The sentiment expressed is said to reflect Mercer's feelings of lost love of Judy Garland with whom he was romantically involved. The song, written in 1942, is a master. As you'll hear Manchester say, it is meant to be "The" Mercer song. I appreciate her subtle and gentle delivery allowing the words to come through on their own, without 'over singing' and appreciating the depth of Mercer's feelings. The song really 'tugs' at your heart strings. In addition to Mercer's emotional lyrics - Carmichael's music is - as Manchester says of the lyrics "poignant' and lush. One could devote a whole channel to Carmichael's work alone. I've always loved and appreciated his work- but didn't realize until researching- the expansive legacy he created that is enjoyed by all: "Heart and Soul" (how many people learned to play that on the piano??), "Stardust" (if for any reason you've not heard that- please listen to Johnny sing it as only he can- you'll find it on 19rebel57's channel-. Composed by Carmichael and Mitchell Parrish). A few other notables (and i mean only a "few") include "Georgia On My Mind" and "The Nearness of You"- which is another absolutely beautiful melody. Carmichael has been described as the "most talented, inventive, sophisticated and jazz-oriented of the hundreds of writers composing pop songs in the first half of the 20th century" . He was an actor, composer and lyricist as well. If you've not seen him on film (I just watched this last night----) listen and watch him in "To Have and Have Not" the 1944 movie and debut of Lauren Bacall- and her 'throaty' delivery of a "How Little We Know" and "Am I Blue"- and watch Bogey literally fall in love with her as she sings.... (both songs can be found on YouTube). I'm happy to provide this because it allows me to honor these wonderful composers and lyricists - and encourages more. Thanks, Britmusicfan, for the 'nudge'. I hope you all enjoy it!
