From 1961 to 1989 a wall split Berlin and Germany in two. The western half was part of democratic West Germany. The eastern half belonged to communist East Germany. Back then, Gabriele Stötzer lived in the East, or the GDR, the German Democratic Republic. She was an artist and protested against the regime. She she was arrested for this and sentenced to a year in jail at the Hoheneck women’s prison in Saxony. After her release, Gabriele Stötzer engaged with the East German state through her art. 30 years ago, on November 9th 1989 the Berlin Wall came down. In the Euromaxx series “Witnessing the Fall of the Wall”, seven artists each tell the story of how they experienced the fall of the Wall. #BerlinWall #GDR #Communism -------------------------------- Subscribe to DW Euromaxx: / dweuromaxx Would you like to find out more about Euromaxx? ▸Website: https://www.dw.com/lifestyle ▸Facebook: / dw.euromaxx ▸Instagram / dw_euromaxx dw.com/lifestyle is bringing engaging insights into European culture and lifestyles to a global audience.
