Complex Sentences Next we’re going to learn about a type of sentence that is a little bit more complicated than the simple and compound sentences we’ve learned about previously. I’m talking about none other than the complex sentence. A complex sentence is a sentence that has an independent clause (a complete sentence) and at least one dependent clause (an incomplete sentence that relies on the independent clause to make sense). The dependent clause is usually introduced by a subordinate conjunction such as “although”, “because”, “since”, “when”, “while” etc. Here’s an example: “I was going to the park, but I forgot my frisbee.” In this sentence, “I was going to the park” is the independent clause and “but I forgot my frisbee” is the dependent clause. Another example: “Whenever I’m feeling down, I listen to music and dance.” In this sentence, “Whenever I’m feeling down” is the dependent clause and “I listen to music and dance” is the independent clause. Complex sentences are like a layered cake, they add depth and interest to our writing and speaking. Complex sentences allow us to express more complex thoughts and ideas, and they are particularly useful for showing cause and effect, making comparisons, and showing contrast. Now, let’s practise building some complex sentences together: Start with a dependent clause Add an independent clause Combine the two with a subordinate conjunction Let’s start with “I woke up late” Now let’s add an independent clause “I missed my morning class” Finally, let’s add the conjunction “so” to combine the two “I woke up late so I missed my morning class.” See? It’s that easy! So don’t be afraid of complex sentences, they are like a tool in your writing and speaking toolbox, they allow you to express more complex thoughts and ideas. That’s all for today, have fun with your writing and speaking, and remember to use your newly acquired knowledge of complex sentences. Exercise: "Complex Sentence Detective" In this exercise, you'll practise identifying complex sentences. Read each sentence and underline the subordinate clause. Then, write what the subordinate clause is doing in the sentence (showing time, reason, purpose, etc.). Example: "I will eat dinner after I finish my homework, which I should do first." (Answer: "after I finish my homework" shows time) 1. "I went to the store, even though it was raining outside." 2. "The book, which I read last night, was amazing." 3. "I will go to the park if the sun comes out." 4. "She took a nap before the party, so she could be well-rested." 5. "I decided to stay home because I was feeling tired." 6. "He finished the puzzle, although it was difficult." 7. "I will call you when I get home, so we can plan our weekend." 8. "She danced in the rain, as she loved the feeling of the cool water." 9. "I won't go to the party until I finish my work." 10. "The dog barked loudly, as it heard a noise outside." Answers: 1. "even though it was raining outside" shows contrast. 2. "which I read last night" provides additional information. 3. "if the sun comes out" shows condition. 4. "before the party" shows time. 5. "because I was feeling tired" shows reason. 6. "although it was difficult" shows contrast. 7. "when I get home" shows time. 8. "as she loved the feeling of the cool water" shows reason. 9. "until I finish my work" shows condition. 10. "as it heard a noise outside" shows reason. All About English At All About English, we bring over three decades of expertise in English language education.
