Auto Wah and Envelope Filter pedals for synthesizers sound demo

Clip 1 - 3 = EBS Bass IQ BL Triple Envelope Filter (starts at 0:51 min) Clip 4 = Electro Harmonix Micro Q-Tron (starts at 2:23 min) Clip 5 = Electro Harmonix Nano Q-Tron (starts at 2:55 min) Clip 6 - 12 = Electro Harmonix Q-Tron Plus (starts at 3:26 min) Clip 13 - 14 = MXR Bass Envelope Filter (starts at 7:02 min) With this release I am happy to announce a new series of videos I called “FX SERIES“ which I would like to dedicate to testing external hardware effects pedals in combination with a signal run from an analog synthesizer. This time my focus is on a variety of Auto Wah and Envelope Filter pedals of diferrent makes/brands to compare their behaviour and sound character when patched to an analog synth – a Moog Grandmother in this particular case. Auto Wahs and envelope Filter have been part of funk and RnB genres since very early days and for me are the essence and main ingredience of classic funk sound. Sure, these pedals are primarily made for the use with electric or bass guitars but as many of you would probably confirm drawing from your own experience they can work as successfully with any other signal. A synthesizer particularly is a worthy candidate to use the „guitar“ pedals on. Still there are some things to keep in mind tough. You often have to be careful to set the gain stages not too hot otherwise you may easily end up with distorted signal and clipping - like I did. Because once you print the sound with the pedal on there is no going back, it is what it is and you have to commit to the way it sounds, there is no “undo” option in case you realize you went over the top with the effect setting after the take is recorded. This is the oldschool approach to recording process and I have grown to like it that way. For a bit of risking and also taking into consideration the surprise factor about what the outcome will be like you may be rewarded with some wonderful totally unique and one of a kind tones that only the hardware units - and notably the fully analog ones - are capable of making. And for that price of admission it is all worth it in my book. Effect pedals although not originally designed for use with synthesizers are a great way to spice up your dry sound to add some warmth, dimension, motion and originality. You do not want to sound like everybody else and fx pedals really open up a whole space of creativity for you and let you experiment with the sound in a way that is as exciting as is adventurous. Like with analog synths there is always a universe of sounds and possibilities waiting for you to be discovered and explored. Sure using fx pedals while recording all your takes live can sometimes make or break the performance but that is part of the magic right? If it works it can be golden and no software fx plugin can really touch the hardware fx pedals purely for the hands on tactile experience, the fun factor and more often than not also for the superior quality of sound. Of course there is some extra work for you to do in order to patch everything up with cables (can be messy), set controls properly making sure it does not distort your signal (unless intentional) and owning more pedals can be a bit demanding on storage space but I really believe it has a lot going for it as opposed to (for me boring:-) software plugins. I used to be a software guy exclusively doing everything ITB, as I have grown older I think I can really appreciate now everything that the hardware – be it a synth or an fx pedal - has to offer even though it may bring you some small obstacles along the way as well. You may have different preferences and ways of working and that is totally fine with me too! On a final note, I do not consider myself to be really an expert neither on synths nor on outboard fx pedals, so I just gave a few units a quick test run to see how they work and how they affect the sound of my synth. I did a bit of live tweaking of the pedals controls while recording the takes so possible jumps in level or slight distortion of the signal can indeed be heard. But that is part of the magic that once done - cannot be undone (unless you record a different take) - it is simply the capture of the creative moment. If you asked me about my personal favorites from this test, my picks would probably be the MXR giving the most consistent and balanced overall presentation for synth bass and lead sounds and the EHX Micro/Nano for the most “funky“ type of wah sound of the entire bunch. Thank you so much for visiting my channel!
