Safe Consumption - a new short documentary. How many lives can one man save? Safe Consumption explores the world hidden down the dirty city centre alleyways most people normally ignore and gets to know the man taking a stand today that could save thousands of lives tomorrow. Sick of seeing homeless heroin and crack cocaine addicts shooting up in the same horrendous conditions he did over twenty years ago, Peter Krykant opened Scotland’s first safe consumption unit in September 2020. With help from a small group of volunteers and unsanctioned by any authority, his van operates Thursdays and Fridays between 10am - 4pm near Parnie Street in Glasgow city centre. As Peter’s campaign for desperately needed safe consumption units gathered momentum, it sparked international media interest and ignited a national conversation on Scotland’s most enduring public health crisis, drug deaths. Now, he seeks to force permanent changes, all while saving lives on a weekly basis. The film is being made available to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the Misuse of Drugs Act (1971). #50YearsofFailure WARNING: The film contains scenes which some viewers many find distressing. 26 May 2021.
