The tank shown in the video clip is the American T34 heavy tank. This tank was a prototype developed from the T29 and T30 series in the late 1940s, and never entered mass production, was a project of the Ordnance Department of the US Army, launched towards the end of World War II. The following companies also worked on it: Pressed Steel Car Company, Chevrolet, Continental, Frankford Arsenal.. Although it was developed towards the end of World War II as a response to the German Tiger and Königstiger, the project was soon abandoned as it proved impractical. • The T34 was an American experimental heavy tank developed in 1945, based on the M26 Pershing chassis. • The goal was to create a tank capable of countering German heavy tanks. • However, the war ended before the tank could be tested in combat, and the question arose as to whether the development was even necessary. • The T34 weighed around 65 tons, which was significantly more than the M26 Pershing (~41 tons). • This mass caused problems with transportation, bridges, and mobility in European terrain. • Critics argued that such a tank would be a logistical nightmare for the US Army. • The T34 was equipped with the 120 mm T53 gun, which had enormous firepower. • However, there was a dilemma: was such a caliber really necessary, given that the Allies already had effective tanks and anti-tank weapons. • In addition, the gun required a dual loading system (specifically a shell and a powder charge), which slowed down the rate of fire and complicated crew training. • Compared to the M26 Pershing, the T34 had more powerful weapons, but was slower and less reliable. • The US Army estimated that investing in the modernization of existing tanks would be more efficient than introducing a completely new model. The controversy surrounding the T34 boils down to the fact that it was technologically impressive but strategically unnecessary. The war ended before it could prove itself, and the US Army concluded that such a tank would be too expensive, too heavy, and logistically impractical. As a result, it remained in the prototype stage and never saw service. There is at least one surviving example on display in the National Armor and Cavalry Museum, Fort Benning, Georgia.
