Alpha Wild Dog Carries Tiny Pups Kicking and Screaming into Den

During mid-June 2025 we were extremely lucky to spend a few days at this African wild dog den site in Khwai Concession, Botswana. Please read below as some of the fascinating behavior we witnessed is explained. We believe that the initial sighting on day 1 was amongst the first few times that these puppies had ventured out of their den with the whole pack present (age estimated around 2-3 weeks old). The alpha female decided to pick them up and put them back in the den when other pack members, especially the yearlings, ventured too close. This was probably to protect the tiny pups from potentially getting injured inadvertently by other excitable pack members. As the pups ventured out more and more in the following few days the alpha became more relaxed. The behavior of the painted dogs around the den was amazing to witness. The dominance of the alpha male and female along with their strong bond was very special as well as the greeting and excitement of the other pack members.
