The Chin Tuck Against Resistance (CTAR) exercise is a targeted therapeutic technique used to strengthen the muscles involved in swallowing, particularly the suprahyoid muscles, which play a crucial role in the elevation of the larynx and opening of the upper esophageal sphincter (UES). To perform the exercise, an individual places an object such as a small rubber ball or a rolled-up towel under their chin and then presses down against it with their chin while maintaining a chin-tucked position. This action creates resistance, which helps to enhance muscle strength and coordination in the anterior neck region. CTAR is often prescribed for individuals with dysphagia (difficulty swallowing) as it can improve the safety and efficiency of swallowing by promoting better control and movement of the larynx and the UES.
