Bill Martin, Jr., was one of America's most outstanding children's authors. Although best known for his book "Brown Bear, Brown Bear What Do You See?", one of his major breakthroughs were these Instant Reader book/cassette sets he made while working for Holt, Rinehart, and Winston. These were intended to help children develop both vocabulary and reading skills. Martin himself reads these tales. This is done three times. The first time he reads solo, the second he encourages the reader to read after him, with music provided by guitarist Al Caiola, which acts as a guide for the reader, synchronized to the syllables of each word. The third time it is just the guitar music synched to the words, for this is the reader's turn to read independently. This was the first "instant reader" I ever heard, way back when I was a kid. This aptly named "Spooky Story" is one of the author's most little known, but it is a treasure. These cassettes are all but out of print, but I was lucky to find some of them and digitize them. You will not find these anywhere in stores today, except on Ebay, but this stories helped me to read a long time ago, and I believe there is a sense of timelessness to these books. Enjoy!
