Koyaanisqatsi is a powerful example of a very specific kind of film, but it is by far not the only example of it and not even the first of its kind. This distinct type of filmic experience has a long history in cinema. Strangely, though, this sub-category of the documentary has distinct traits and elements that appear in other films, yet there has been no attempt to codify these films into a single genre or subgenre, as is frequently the case with cinematic works.
