Just like the Canary Islands, the Azores Island chain contains numerous active volcanoes. The most recent of these to produce an eruption was Fayal, which famously erupted from 1957 to 1958. It first built a new island, and later joined with the mainland through extensive amounts of falling ash and lava flows.
