The rectus sheath is a multilayered aponeurosis that encloses the rectus abdominis and pyramidalis muscles. Let’s delve into its anatomy and function: Definition: The rectus sheath is a tendon sheath (aponeurosis) formed by the fusion of tendons from the external abdominal oblique, internal abdominal oblique, and transversus abdominis muscles. It covers the anterior and posterior surfaces of the upper three-quarters of the rectus abdominis muscle, as well as the lower quarter of its anterior surface. Interestingly, the lower quarter of the posterior surface of the rectus abdominis muscle isn’t covered by the rectus sheath; instead, it lies directly on the transversalis fascia. Anatomy: The rectus sheath has two walls: Anterior wall: Composed of the aponeuroses of the external abdominal oblique, internal abdominal oblique, and transversus abdominis muscles. Posterior wall: Also formed by the aponeuroses of the internal abdominal oblique and transversus abdominis muscles. Within the rectus sheath, you’ll find: Rectus abdominis and pyramidalis muscles Superior and inferior epigastric arteries and veins Lymphatic vessels Termination parts of lower five intercostal nerves (T7-T11) Termination of the 12th thoracic nerve (T12). Function: Protection: The rectus sheath safeguards the anterior abdominal muscles and vessels. Compression and support: It provides maximal compression and support for abdominal organs1. #Rectussheath
