It’s been unseasonably warm here in north Idaho. November, and it’s still short sleeve weather for the most part. But there’s a change in the air. Just a few days from now the weather man is predicting a drop in the barometric pressure and I’m predicting some time in the woods with a primitive osage recurve in hand. Coincidentally the whitetail deer rut will be creeping up as well. Wise old bucks will lose their minds and start chasing does in broad daylight. It’s one of my favorite times of year to be bow hunting deer. Whitetails are far and away the most hunted big game species in North America. I’d even venture to say that more whitetail venison fills the freezer of American hunters than all other game species combined. Their expansive range, ability to thrive in close association with people, and high productivity in good habitat tend to offset the species unparalleled paranoia when it comes to harvest. In short, there’s just a hell of a lot of deer and they’re often easily accessible. But when it comes to deer hunting, most folks think of Midwest farm country, or perhaps a hardwood bottom along some southern river. They think tree stands and food plots. Here in the rugged areas of the west we have whitetails as well. But you won’t find them munching clover between the rows of a pine plantation. These are mountain deer. For the next few 2018 deer hunting videos Clay Hayes is joined by a few Oregonians who’ve never hunted whitetails before. So sneaking around the steep open slopes trying to spot and stalk deer will be their first introduction to bowhunting whitetails. Stay tuned to see how they do.
