You don’t want to make it worse but you want to see some progression and obviously become stronger in your program overall. When I had my disc herniation l5s1 and bulging at l4l5 I had to give up deadlifting, squatting and strong man until my disc had healed enough for me to return to the gym. I then went about building up my strength and spinal stability without initially loading my spine directly but in a way that would allow me to load it further down my recovery path.
