THE SONGBIRD: Lily Pons (1898 - 1976) was born Alice Josephine Pons near Cannes, and after piano and voice lessons, made her debut in 1928 as Lakmé in Mulhouse, France. She made her debut at The Met as Lucia in 1931 and soon became a cultural sensation, appearing frequently on the radio, on television, in lifestyle and fashion magazines, on concert and recital tours, making dozens of commercial recordings, and in three Hollywood musical films -- including "I Dream Too Much" from 1935 with music by Jerome Kern. Pons was a principal soprano at the Met for 30 years, appearing 300 times in ten roles, most frequently as Lucia (93 performances), Lakmé (50 performances), and Gilda (49 performances). THE MUSIC: In Felicien David's 1851 exotic opera "La Perle du Bresil" (The Pearl of Brazil), the prima donna role of Zora was originated in Paris by French soprano Zoë Duez and was sung soon after by legendary sopranos Caroline Miolan-Carvalho and Emma Nevada. No one produces this opera now. The birdsong aria “Charmant oiseau” is sung by Zora in the last act after she returns to her homeland of Brazil and recognizes the distinct call of the mysoli bird.
