(12 Dec 1978) Kenyan President Daniel Arap Moi announces in Nairobi that he has freed all 16 of Kenya's political detainees in a gesture to unity and stability. The country's political prisoners were mostly opposition politicians, some of whom had taken part in the formation of a party that was subsequently banned. Their release had been expected for some time since Moi succeeded to the presidency following the death in August of Kenya's first president, Jomo Kenyatta. Moi makes the announcement at a mass rally marking the fifteenth anniversary of Kenya's independence from Britain.
