My first hemispherical chime! Visited with @ProfMoose. St Matthew's Church in Landscove, Devon, is a hidden gem. Built between 1849 and 1850 to designs by John Loughborough Pearson, the church is richly decorated. It is built in the Decorated Gothic Revival style, and similarities can be seen to Pearson's Truro Cathedral and St John the Evangelist in Croydon. The interior is faced with warm coloured Bath stone and the roof is covered in Welsh slate. The south east tower has a large spire, and contains a hemispherical chime of eight bells, the bass bell weighing 3-2-3cwt. The key is C#. All eight bells were cast by Mears and Stainbank of Whitechapel, London, with the front seven cast in 1911 and the bass bell in 1912. They are chimed from the ground floor with an Ellacombe apparatus. The tower has issues with jackdaws - they have built a huge nest inside the bass bell, which has dampened its sound! Anyway, they form a rather lovely chime of eight bells. Enjoy!
