Built in the 16th century by Afghan king Sher Shah Suri, it was strategically constructed to suppress the local Gakhar tribes and protect the trade route between Peshawar and the Indian subcontinent. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the fort is an exceptional example of early Muslim military architecture in South Asia, blending Pashtun and Hindu architectural styles. Key Features of Rohtas Fort: 1. Size and Layout: • The fort spans over 70 hectares, making it one of the largest in the region. • Its walls are nearly 4 km long and are reinforced with bastions and 12 monumental gates. 2. Famous Gates: • Sohail Gate: The most iconic and well-preserved gateway. • Kabuli Gate: Facing Kabul, it was a key entrance for travelers coming from the northwest. • Shah Chandwali Gate: Associated with the saint Shah Chandwali, who is said to have blessed the construction of the fort. 3. Architectural Highlights: • The walls are built using ashlar masonry and are adorned with intricate carvings. • The fort contains a small mosque, Haveli Man Singh, and several baolis (stepwells) used for water storage. 4. Strategic Importance: • Built on a hilltop, it overlooks the Pothohar Plateau, providing a commanding view of the surrounding landscape. • It was never successfully attacked, showcasing its formidable design. Today, Rohtas Fort is a popular tourist attraction and a symbol of Pakistan’s rich heritage. Its grandeur attracts historians, architects, and travelers from around the world.
