The Battle of Thiepval was a phase of the larger Battle of the Somme fought in late September and October 1916 on the Thiepval Ridge in northern France. The village of Thiepval and the surrounding German defenses, including the Schwaben Redoubt, had resisted repeated British assaults since the opening day of the Somme offensive. On 26–28 September 1916, British and Canadian units launched a renewed and heavily supported attack with artillery, tanks, and infantry coordination. After severe fighting through smashed trenches and fortified cellars, Thiepval was finally captured, marking one of the few clear tactical successes of the Somme campaign. The struggle for Thiepval cost thousands of casualties and demonstrated the immense human price of gaining even small stretches of ground in trench warfare.
