Allan Kaprow used a variety of terms for the written aspects of his works: instructions, directions, scores, recipes. These terms suggest components, actions, and sequencing, and by the end of his life the artist began to use the word "reinvention" (as both verb and noun) to name the separate iterations of any given recipe. This talk will explore the historical context and framing of Kaprow's "invention" and some of the implications of such "reinvention" for contempoary artistic and critical practices. Judith Rodenbeck is the author of Radical Prototypes: Allan Kaprow and the Invention of Happenings (MIT Press, 2011). A past editor of Art Journal, she has written for magazines such as October, Grey Room, X-TRA, Artforum and Modern Painters and for exhibitions ranging from Antonio Manuel: I Want to Act! Not Represent! (2011, Americas Society) and Gutai: Splendid Playground (2013, Guggenheim) to Akram Zaatari: All Is Well (2014, Agnes Etherington) and Seven Performances: Corin Hewitt (2014, Cleveland Museum of Contemporary Art). She teaches modern and contemporaryart at Sarah Lawrence College, in Bronxville, New York. http://fundaciotapies.org/site/spip.p...
