On Feb. 15, 1862, Brig. Gen. Simon Bolivar Buckner surrendered his Confederate army to Brig. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant. The event is best remembered for Grant's demand of immediate and unconditional surrender. News of the capitulation spread like wildfire through the victorious Union army before Buckner's men lowered the Confederate flag from the fort. One of Grant's subordinates, Brig. Gen. Lew Wallace, was confused. He wondered why the Confederate flag was still flying. This is where today's story begins. "Life on the Civil War Research Trail" is hosted by Ronald S.
