Africa’s Biggest Airport: Ethiopia Starts $12.5B Mega Project | APT

Ethiopia has officially begun construction of the $12.5 billion Bishoftu Mega International Airport, a project officials say will become Africa’s largest aviation hub once completed. Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed led the cornerstone-laying ceremony on January 10 near Bishoftu, about 40 km southeast of Addis Ababa. The airport is planned to feature four runways and an initial capacity of 60 million passengers annually, with long-term expansion to 110 million passengers, according to Ethiopian Airlines. Ethiopian Airlines Group CEO Mesfin Tasew said around $6 billion in financing has already been secured, with additional funding expected from institutions and partners in the Middle East, China, Europe, the United States, and the African Development Bank. The airline has committed $610 million from its own resources for early construction. Officials say the project will strengthen Ethiopia’s role as a global aviation and trade gateway.
