CB007 - On the simple meaning of the Tanach (TTP Chapter 13) Third episode in the series Reading Baruch Spinoza's Political Theological Treatise with R Shnayor Burton We examine Spinoza's claim that the Bible contains only simple moral exhortations, not philosophical truth. Shnayor argues that even if the message is simple, and even there are no esoteric layers in the text, still the simple ideas presuppose complex metaphysics. He adds that instead of reading the text from the outside as a receiver, the true esoteric reading is to read the text as the prophet wrote it, which will then open us to the world of questions and truths which created the text. This kind of reading from the inside is something Spinoza entirely lacks, and we discuss if Rambam does have it. Yitzchok then questions whether this kind of reading is really possible under an existing religion. The principle of the cessation of prophecy, is arguably more central to how religion functions than the claim that prophecy exists, This principle is then what blocks anyone proposing to read in this way, and we discuss whether we know why this happened and why someone like Spinoza and whether this is what all meforshim are secretly doing. We end by wondering if there is a third way – can we get out of the seduction of pshat where Spinoza’s claim seems reasonable, and is there a way to keep the questions the Prophets are based on open without destroying the system itself.
