June Clark is an internationally renowned artist. Born in Harlem, New York, she left America for Toronto during the political unrest and riots in New York City in the 1960s. Clark created the installation work Harlem Quilt during a 1996-1997 residency at the Studio Museum in Harlem. The work is comprised of over 300 individual pieces of fabric each with a black and white photograph taken by Clark in Harlem, representing her coming to terms with returning to New York City. Each fabric piece, sourced from a local Goodwill store in Harlem, is illuminated by a single lightbulb, creating a sense of intimacy and commemoration. In this Viewpoint Lecture, June Clark discusses the work Harlem Quilt in the context of her life: her upbringing in Harlem, relocating to Canada, and returning home for an artist residency in New York City.
