Answering the prompt “How is regulating internet platforms different from regulating past technologies,” I defined “internet platforms” through conceptual legal work by eminent scholar Julie Cohen, “regulation” through work by Barak Orback and David Baron, and “different” in comparing qualitative consumer experiences, quantitative economic data, and other data points to analyze what makes “Big Tech platforms” different from other tech companies (internet backbone, hardware, software, websites, etc.). Then I discussed why the government desires to regulate platforms, with an eye toward how they already regulate and they should regulate them.
