In 2015 19 year old Stephen Smith was found dead in the middle of the road in Hampton County, South Carolina, just 15 Miles from the Murdaugh family home. Despite blunt force trauma to his head, the pathologist ruled that the teen was killed by a vehicle-hit-and run. Katie Couric spoke with Sandy Smith, Stephen’s mother, who never believed her son was killed by a hit-and-run, and for eight years has been fighting for the case to be reopened, which it finally will be thanks to renewed interest from Alex Murdaugh’s murder conviction.
