Carmel Malaybalay City is one of the 22 Carmelite Nun Communities in the Philippines Today The discalced Carmelite nuns are cloistered, contemplative women living in numerous monasteries dedicated to prayer, silence, and serving the Church through their spiritual lives, forming the Philippine Federation of Discalced Carmelite Nuns which supports the establishment and growth of these enclosed communities across the country, focused on deep union with God and Carmelite charism. Key Aspects: Cloistered Life: They live in enclosed monasteries, rarely leaving, dedicating their days to prayer and contemplation for the needs of the Church and world. Contemplative Mission: Their primary "apostolate" is prayer, offering an "oasis of prayer" and fostering faith through their hidden lives. Federation: They belong to the Philippine Federation of Discalced Carmelite Nuns, an association of monasteries established in 1983, which helps coordinate their foundations. Major Monasteries: Key communities include the Infanta Carmel (founded 1981) and the Jaro Carmel (established by French nuns). Foundations: The first monastery in Jaro Iloilo Carmel led to many others, resulting in about 22 Carmelite monasteries across the Philippines. Who They Are: They are Catholic nuns, following the tradition of St. Teresa of Ávila and St. John of the Cross, emphasizing interior prayer, simplicity, and humility. They are distinct from but related to the Discalced Carmelite Friars (OCD) and the Secular Order of Discalced Carmelites (lay members).
