In Mongolia’s remote northern taiga, near the Russian border, the Tsaatan (Dukha) people—about 250 individuals in 40-50 families—live with semi-domesticated reindeer. To reach them we rode 4 difficult days on horseback for 100 miles (160km) roundtrip. Nights were spent in tents warmed by fires. When we arrived we entered their camp of teepees. We watched reindeer milking and shared airag (fermented mare’s milk) under the stars.
